Very cool this Move Save. I always played D&D without minis and always had problems with it. Mainly movement. This is my headache, because is hard to players visualize the terrains and contantly they enter in danger areas or take dumb decisions because of not see a map.

Awesome stuff! I really like the idea of the move advantage, and how this can make combat in 4E more flexible and fluid. I'm a big fan of fluid, narrative combat in RPGs, as opposed to grid-based combat...although D&D started in wargaming, I don't think it needs to stay there.

I really like the move advantage mechanic and have been entertaining the idea of keeping it even in combat with a grid and miniatures. I think it helps to maintain the thought that everything in combat is happening all at once. These rules really emphasize the notion that everyone is moving simultaneously and continuously throughout the encounter.

While I enjoy 4th edition (and am NOT bashing or flaming here), I think this is a ridiculous statement:

"But asking players to picturing several party members’ and their enemies’ relative position is asking for brain overload."

I disagree. Players aren't stupid, and I don't feel we should encourage gaming that supports 'dumbed down' play.

The 'players can't handle too much' philosophy is one of the few strong gripes I have with 4E.

Wow, quite a post. Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I've just gone through your Off the Grid series and found it to be great. :) I've just come to the site so it's all been catching up, when I first saw the title I thought it was going to be about playing without miniatures and then was pleasantly surprised by the angle the series took. And now you reach the point I was expecting to start at. I do hope that you are going to go back to and continue the standard style Off the Grid posts.

When you get a chance, drop a line and let me know how you like it! I'll have simpler, less crunchy rules available soon as well.
