These are excellent ideas that I will try to implement in my own games on the wave. Thanks for the ideas, and thanks for posting!

Oh and 'Save My Arse' TPK resist characters. Or SUBs that comes in when the party looks like they have bitten off more than they can chew and are death spiralling into a TPK.

'I heard the screams and came to help.'

With the ability to just pull in players and characters at short notice it opens up lots of interesting options.

Another thought is - you could just start the campaign with one character (the first.) They wander around doing stuff, not combat unless you are prepared for that, and others get introduced more naturally rather than the 'You've known each other since childhood' etc.

The new players get introduced as they come and meet properly rather than artificially (and boringly.) You could even have a swap around. When a character dies, they are out, and then comes in another player.

If it is 4E you would be slightly constrained by the Role system of Defender, Leader, Striker, Controller.

I just had a little thought - couldn't you have people come in on a relatively short term basis to play NPCs. Lets face it. Every DM has about 3 characters in them. You could have a world worth of varied 'actors' at your fingertips.

In fact a person could have an NPC character(s) all drawn up and be sitting waiting for a 'job.' You can look for the type of NPC you are looking for (they have a sort of CV) and you can invite them on a temp basis.

'We go into the tavern and buy a drink.'
DM - looks for a tavern owner, someone grumpy.
Insert NPC.

Just a thought.

This is interesting stuff. I've never played in a Pbp game (unless you count some free-form role playing back in the golden days of the dialup BBS), but I've been playing around with a lot of tools to help organize and automate the drudge work in my campaign. This might be useful for group communication between sessions, at the very least. Maybe we could even use it to get through some story exposition.

Now that I'm thinking about it more, this would be really cool to set up with a dedicated MapTool server. Keep all the narrative in the Wave and just let the MapTool server run, recording all the mechanical bits and macros. People could log on and take their moves as needed.

After reading this, I find myself wishing that I knew somebody who could send me an invite - this looks like it will make online gaming so much easier, it won't even be funny.
