The victim who lashes out is another example of a villain. They were ordinary but something tore the veneer off society – neither nihilistic as they know exactly what needs to be done nor well-intentioned as what will happen is nasty…

The visionary whose worldview seems normal on the surface but that seethes with hate and prejudice just under the surface against those who are not as pure, virtuous or enlightened as they are.

The resolute is someone who has pledged to see something through. It may not be altruistic, it may not even be mercenary, it may be just that if they don’t, someone else with the will shall not hesitate and that forces their hand.

One is the bad guy who does bad things because it’s his job. He doesn’t pretend that he has a higher purpose, and he isn’t really insane, but that’s just how he makes his living. Maybe he was pushed to such cynical amorality by harsh circumstances. Maybe he has his limits and own code of conduct, which the heroes can appeal to or exploit. But ultimately, he’s not malicious, but no less dangerous.

Then you have Frankenstein’s Monster. Creatures that are misunderstood and very clearly wronged by society at large. Doesn’t make their subsequent actions right. Doesn’t mean that they don’t have to be put down, but they’ve got that one thing that makes us truly connect with a bad guy: Pathos.
