"You are roleplaying towards a discrete goal" -- this hits the nail on the head. Instead of foraging in the forest of potential plot hooks and story developments; you are hunting for a specific outcome. Both are fine, but this post definitely lays it down and shows when to use, and not to use, S.C.s in game play. Thanks again!

Very helpful! I'm having problems knowing when to use a skill challenge and when just to roleplay - I like your explanation here.

I'd also tweak the defense auras. I'd make it one aura and you get to pick when you use it which defense gets buffed. As written, they seem too narrow to ever be trained.

Sustain minor is pretty rough for a paladin. You're pretty much giving up your use of divine challenge. Maybe the sustain could be something different. Maybe it would last until end of encounter, but the minor action would snap the aura to the paladin's location.

I get your blog entries through RSS and somehow always seem to be starring them to read again later. Thanks for answering some of my questions!

I think your blog is the only thing that keeps me excited about the potential of this new mechanic and you keep nailing it.

(still looking for a good skill challenge for foiling an assassination attempt.... from prior investigations to the actual act. =] )
