BlackTree Chronicles, Session #5: Returns, Departures, Arrival

The PCs have rescued Huxor and companions.  Huxor goes into detail about what the plans he overheard were, and is impatient to get back and share them with the guard.

Without stopping to see Arbrand first, the group heads to see the head of the militia, Troy Blackshield, a very neat but skeptical dwarf.  He hears the Huxor story but still needs more proof before he feels he can commit energy to what Huxor is reporting.

Huxor is slams his fist on the dwarve’s desk and the PCs are clearly questioning his logic, becoming perturbed when he says that he wants them to report back in a few days and have them check out where the kobolds would be staging their attack from.

The players grab some supplies and they’re grumbling about what’s happening, but they intend to go along with Troy’s plan, so that some action can be taken –according to Huxor, there’s only two weeks until the planned invasion, so it feels to the players as if they are seriously wasting time doing this.

During the wait, the tiefling rogue meets with the newly-widowed wife of the merchant they were unable to save in the opening salvos of the campaign.  She plans to join a convent (“This world has no color left in it”), but before she goes, she wants to know if Tyrst will attempt to gain an item for her, the “Pauper’s Sword”.  This is an heirloom of some power that was lost to the merchant’s family ages ago.

Tyrst agrees to search when she attends to the more pressing matters at hand, and with that the characters are off to scout the Vessa Hills.

They make it halfway to the site when they are attacked in the night by a pack of wolves, led by a dire wolf.  Poor rolling on my part (three ones in succession) and fantastic rolling on Chuck’s part (four 20s over the course of several turns) makes the encounter a little easier than I was intending, but such is life.  The ranger and rogue got pretty roughed up, but timely back up healing from the paladin, as well as decent tanking keeps everyone on their feet this time.

We got started late for this session, and this combat took a long time –no minions! — so we end the session here.  The PCs have some huge surprises coming their way!
